ARTIST STATEMENT

Movement and Time are the main ways by which humans perceive and define reality. For over 30 years, I've been developing methods to create art that encompasses both these dimensions, stirring the imagination and inducing an alpha state - a tranquil, creative state of mind.

BIOGRAPHY

Steve Matson pioneered “Moving Paintings”, animated, fine art works that are displayed on Digital screens. He is a self-taught artist who grew up in Hawaii surrounded by nature and this connection to beauty has always influenced his work. His mother was an accomplished artist, recognized his talents at a very young age and encouraged his love for drawing and painting.

In 1985 Steve immediately saw the potential for the first computer designed for artists (“The Paint Box") to be used in art. This ultimately launched him into an award winning career in film and TV. Credits include: Life of Pi (Academy Award, Best Visual Effects 2013), Polar Express, Star Wars EP3, Superman, The Chronicles of Narnia, Surfs Up, Open Season, Beowulf, 300 and many others.

As the tech matured, he was able to connect his computer knowledge with his fine art paintings. In 2008 he created his first Moving Painting and sold them on commercial monitors through fine art galleries that represented his work.

To devise each Moving Painting, Steve starts with a regular artwork he creates on canvas, combines it with animation, digital visual effects, cinematography, sound and up to 8 months of patient work.

Expanding further, in 2014, he partnered with Nicolas Donel, a French digital artist, in order to develop their proprietary technology called “The ArtStick” a custom plug-n-play digital media player that displays Steve's encrypted art on any TV. This made Moving Paintings accessible to almost anyone, worldwide.
